Australians among the harderst workers in the developed world

Published 05/11/08
Australians are finding their working days are longer and ‘more intense’ according to a study by the University of Sydney.

It found that full-time workers put in an average 44 hours a week, with self-employed people working an average of 50 hours a week, some of the longest working weeks in the developed world.

Over half of all workers surveyed said that “more and more” was expected of them for the same amount of pay.

The University of New South Wales’ Chris Jackson, an expert in organisation and management, told an internet news site that while increased responsibility can lead to stress and burnouts, it can also be a positive experience as people are able to further their professional potential.

Have your say.

Are you working longer hours since the credit crunch?
