Utah has become the first U.S.
state to mandate a four day working week in a year-long experiment sparked by
high fuel costs and traffic congestion.
The new working week, consisting
of four 10-hour days a week, is gaining public support throughout the U.S.
Florida University announced that
its decision to cut down to a four day week would save an estimated $250 000 on
electricity.
However industry experts doubt
the trend will become widespread in Australia.
Executive Director of Adelaide’s
Centre for Labour Research John Spoehr told a South Australian newspaper that compressed
weeks have been offered in several industries (namely mining and the public
sector), but not many people have taken up the opportunity.
